HARRISBURG -- PennDOT will close Route 283 eastbound in the area of the Harrisburg East toll plaza on the PA Turnpike to repair a sinkhole.

On Friday at 9 p.m., 283 East will be closed east of the interchange with Interstate 283 and the Harrisburg East toll plaza of the Turnpike.  The closure is necessary so that construction crews can address a sinkhole located about a half-mile east of the interchange.

That sinkhole is located about a half-mile east of the interchange that is undermining the concrete in both eastbound lanes.  This portion of Route 283 eastbound carries a daily traffic volume of nearly 26,000 vehicles.

Motorists will be detoured through the interchange and directed onto northbound Eisenhower Blvd., to Fulling Mill Road and then eastbound on Fulling Mill Road to Union Street and then south on Union Street to eastbound 283.

Construction crews intend to remove the concrete pavement over the sinkhole, assess the size and nature of the sinkhole and determine how to repair it.

Then they will restore eastbound Route 283, hopefully by the time for the morning rush.

However, it is possible the work may be completed sooner.

PennDOT advises motorists to be alert to the construction, be patient and slow down when approaching the work zone and traveling through the detour.
