Auditor General's audit shows financial distress at Steelton-Highspire School District

Updated: Friday, February 21 2014, 04:55 PM CST
State Auditor General Eugene Depasquale says the Steelton-Highspire School district is facing serious financial problems, and it's taking a toll on education.

A financial review showed the district had a nearly $2.7 million deficit in the 2011-2012 school year. Just last March the district was placed on a financial watch list by the Department of Education.

Depasquale says the district is on life support and if changes aren't made soon, the state might have to step in, and he says that's something he hopes to avoid.  "We've got to come up with a better plan for what happens when school districts are in this kind of distress. State take overs again have no track records of success."

Depasquale's audit showed financial problems stemmed from failure to control expenses in its budget and high real estate delinquent taxes.

He's urging the district to take advantage of assistance offered by the Department of Education, to prevent any loss of services for students.
