Caterpillar Inc. to stay in York County, invest in distribution center

Updated: Monday, September 30 2013, 07:05 PM CDT
Reported by Kirk Clyatt:

Caterpillar construction equipment is ubiquitous around the world.  One of the manufacturing centers used to be in York, but that left the area years ago.

On Monday, they announced that the distribution facility will not be going anywhere.

Caterpillar held a press conference to announce the company is going to purchase the facility they had been leasing for the past 13 years.  “Over the next several years Caterpillar intends to reinvest in this property and modernize it, with a focus on improving customer support,” stated Caterpillar spokesperson Jim Dugan.

The distribution center currently remains employs around 200 people.  Almost a year ago, those employees were notified that the center could be relocating.

But Monday, after a longer than expected wait, the employees in York are breathing a sigh of relief.  The company announced that they were going to be purchasing the facility that they had been leasing for the past 13 years, it's a 1.1 million square foot building and Caterpillar will be staying in York.

“We're thrilled to able to make this announcement today and begin the next phase moving forward for this facility,” included Dugan.  “We certainly want to thank our employees, first and foremost for their patience, we realize that for the last year or so they have been waiting to hear what the final decision would be.”

Once the modernization is complete, Caterpillar will have a grand reopening in York, but that will still be several years away.

Caterpillar Inc, announced that it will stay in York County. The company previously said it was contemplating a decision to move the operations out of York.

Officials announced that the York Distribution Center, the 1.1 million square foot leased facility, will be purchased and modernized.

This announcement comes on the 60th anniversary of Caterpillars presence in York. In 1953, Caterpillar opened the parts distribution center on Memory Lane as one of the largest and most modern distribution centers in the United States, using technology such as an automated crane system and computerized inventory management.

Once completed, the modernization of the York Distribution Center will bring the total new and renovated warehouse space in the Cat Parts Network to 6 million square feet, enhancing Caterpillars capability to meet customer needs.
