CHAMBERSBURG -- The Chambersburg Area School Board just gave approval for a new Navy Cadet program at the high school.

Some parents are concerned the program's cost will end up on taxpayers' laps.
However, Principal Buddy Chapel says they are working to have the program paid through community contributions and possible federal funding.

Already, he reports 190 students are interested in the program.

He says this effort matches the school's goal to find every student a career or college before they graduate.

"This is not about recruitment for the Navy, it's more about leadership and responsibility," Chapel said.

"I am happy about the program," said parent Jessica Melhorn, but she is still concerned about the cost.

"It's good program like this being offered to the students, however, the cost is of concern and not enough research was done before the decision," she added.

The program curriculum will be developed over the next few months with public input. The cadet program is slated to begin next semester.
