RED LION -- A York County fire company is mourning the loss of one its volunteers who died Christmas Eve after being hit while jogging.

A lighted sign at the North Hopewell-Winterstown Fire Company reads, "Rest in Peace Cory Dane Haley, Pride of Forty-five." On the side the fire station, the flag has been lowered to half-staff.

Haley was hit as he ran on Winterstown Road in Red Lion just after sunset Christmas Eve.

Aaron Houseman is also a volunteer at the station and he says Haley was a big help to community, and someone who made big impact locally. More than that, he was about to serve our country in the air force.

A Christmas tree with a Firefighter's hat marks where Haley was hit -- a heartfelt tribute from the fire company he served.

"He got firefighter of the year last year," Houseman said. "He did his best to train stay physically fit, do everything by the letter."

Despite wearing a reflector while jogging, Haley was first hit by a car in the southbound lane, then thrown into the northbound lane where he was hit again by a pick-up truck.

Attempts to save him failed at the hospital. Many from his fire company saw the call come out but didn't know it was their friend until later in the night.

"I am kind of happy I wasn't around for it because I would have broken down, I wouldn't function. But on other hand, I am unhappy not to be there to ride ambulance and do what I could," Houseman said.

Friends told CBS 21 News that Haley was set to wed his fiancee in the next few months, as well as take an oath of service to his country. Houseman said that Haley had a tremendous commitment to getting fit for the air force and had been running a great deal in the last couple of months.

He added that Hely had a smile that everyone will remember and a commitment to serve that everyone will miss.
