Copper thefts at vacant homes on the rise in Cumberland, York Counties

Updated: Tuesday, March 4 2014, 06:27 PM CST
Reported by Christina Butler:

YORK -- Police in our area are investigating several recent reports of copper thefts.  In February, there were numerous reports in both Cumberland County and York County.

Here's a breakdown of the crimes:

Lemoyne:

February 28: 300 and 400 block of Herman Street

February 27: 600 block of Bosler Street and 800 block of Hummel Street

York:

March 1: 100 block of South Pershing

Mid-February:  College Avenue, Cottage Avenue, and Pattinson Street

Police say in the Cumberland County cases, at least one door was kicked in to gain access to a vacant home. All of the homes that were targeted were unoccupied.

Sgt. Jeffrey Dunbar with York Area Regional Police says copper thefts aren't necessarily on the rise, but rather steady and popping up throughout the year.

"It's something people need to be aware of, especially with vacant or empty homes," he says. He advises paying extra attention to anyone suspicious who may be scoping out homes.
