Corbett, GOP confront worries of a Santorum replay

Updated: Saturday, October 12 2013, 07:32 PM CDT
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Some Republicans are watching Gov. Tom Corbett's sagging poll numbers with growing unease.

They saw what happened eight years ago, when then-U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's landslide loss to Bob Casey was foreshadowed by a poll 14 months before the election. In late August, the same pollster released a survey that found nearly seven in 10 Pennsylvania voters saying Corbett should be a one-term governor.

Some party loyalists have talked about trying to recruit another candidate to run in 2014.

But Pennsylvania's Republican Party chairman, Rob Gleason, says he knows of no internal dissension over Corbett, and says the party's united behind the incumbent.

Corbett campaign consultant, John Brabender, says polling numbers won't matter until after voters know who Corbett's Democratic opponent will be and Corbett's campaign begins selling his candidacy to the public.
