Demolition of Harrisburg church continues Thursday

Reported by: Michael Gorsegner

The leveling of the more than one-hundred-year-old church in Harrisburg is set to continue.

In court Wednesday the owner of the condemned building, Bishop Augustus Sullivan, withdrew the complaint to stop the demolition.  Sullivan's attorney says since there is no way to save the building there's no need to continue the injunction.

Crews began bulldozing the church Monday when the city determined the roof was unsafe after a portion of it collapsed several weeks ago forcing several families from their homes.

City leaders say they have been after Sullivan for years to make repairs to Victory Outreach Christian Church and nothing was done.  However Sullivan's attorney, Sandra Thompson, says he was working with the city for years to fix the property.  The VOCC believes Harrisburg officials violated its due process and should foot the demolition bill.

If no agreement is reached with the city Sullivan's attorneys plan to go through the civil process.

Demolition of the church is expected to take about two weeks.

It is not known how soon displaced families can return home.  Demolition of Harrisburg church continues Thursday
