GREENCASTLE -- A great-grandmother in Franklin County is counting her blessings after a man forced his way into her house demanding money.

The woman said around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, she awoke to a man going through her purse and wallet in her bedroom. At first, she thought it was her son, but quickly realized it wasn't.

"He kept saying, 'Where do you keep your money? Where's your money?' and I said, 'I don't keep it in my house,'" she said.

Too far from her phone, she pressed her Life Alert button on her necklace.

However, she believes that the invader knew what she was doing.

"He evidently knew what it was, and he said, 'Don't touch that,'" she said.

But she did anyway. Within moments, her call for help was heard and the man who broke in took off. Police arrived soon after and came across broken glass of her door and her cabinets and drawers. The man took off with only $30.

"i know the Lord is taking care of me," she said, not wanting to disclose her identity.

She was among three other women in their 70s and 80s who live alone who fell victim to a home invasion all in the same day.

Police reported similar incidents along Buchanan Trail East, Shady Grove in Antrim township and Wayne Highway in Quincy Township.

Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg are investigating and believe the same man is involved.

"It is pretty brazen of them to attack elderly people," said Sgt. Randy Kane. The officer hopes others will check on their elderly neighbors, especially during this time.

Justin Meredith lives along Gearhart Road where one of the home invasions occured.

"Unbelievable," said Meredith, who plans to discuss the matter with his older neighbors and to check on them.

Kane describes the man of interest as having a small or medium build, standing between 5 feet, 4 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches tall.

The man is most likely involved in a rash of similar home invasions throughout southern Franklin County. Police said the invader targeted four homes along Buchanan Trail East, Shady Grove, Antrim Township; Wayne Highway in Quincy Township; and Leitersburg Pike near Wayensboro. Officials believe the same person was involved at a similar invasion in Washington Township just before Christmas.

Anybody with information is asked to call Pennsylvania State Police at 717-264-5161.
