North Middleton Township- A Cumberland County man is facing charges after allegedly stealing over $73,000 from Veteran's of Foreign War Post 477.

North Middleton Township Police say Robert Joseph Wood Jr., 50, of Carlisle turned himself in. Wood is charged with dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity, theft by unlawful taking , theft by deception, receiving stolen property, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, and unlawful use of a computer.

Police began their investigation in November, after receiving a complaint from Veteran's of Foreign War Post 477, located on Trindle Road.

"It was something we expected, it was a long time coming," says Floyd Fahnestock, who now handles all of the finances for VFW Post 477 in Carlisle.

"If he wanted something we would've given it to him," said Post Commander Reuben Nace.  Nace hasn't spoken to Wood since he was charged and remains in disbelief why anyone would do this to the VFW.  "Just don't steal.  I mean that's what our obligation is here, to help."

Wood Jr. was Quartermaster for the post from May 2011 to June 2012, when he allegedly stole $73,082. 92 from the post funds.

Wood Jr. was released on $5,000 unsecured bail. CBS 21 reached out to him for comment, but several phone numbers attributed to his name had been disconnected.

Wood's charge comes as VFW's across the state are struggling with new tax guidelines, mainly the new small games of chance tax.  Post 477 feels it can weather this storm and stay in operation even if they do not receive restitution if Wood is found guilty.Ex-VFW official charged with embezzlement
