Reported by: Kyle Rogers

In a service Tuesday night, Bishop Ronald Gainer spoke on the power of prayer to his new parishioners in Harrisburg.

Gainer, set to be installed as Harrisburg’s 11th bishop, led a Vespers service ahead of a mass on Wednesday as he serves to replace the late Joseph McFadden who died last summer.

Hundreds of Catholics – from here at home to across the country – traveled to the region for services welcoming Gainer to Harrisburg.

“He’s so jovial,” said Donna Marie Laino of Philadelphia. A long-time friend of Gainer’s, Laino said her constant connection to Gainer from his college days helped lead her on a spiritual path.

Gainer, a native of Pottsville, most recently served as bishop in Kentucky.

The bishop will be installed at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg at 2p.m. on Wednesday. Guests include local ministers and those from a far, including the United States representative to the papal conclave, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò.

CBS 21 News will live-stream the invite-only mass online at cbs21.com.
