Harrisburg – Dauphin County

Hundreds of people gathered in Fort Hunter Park on Sunday for the annual Maple Sugar Festival, which featured special demonstrations, candy making, and of course, free samples of maple syrup.

The festival invited the public to learn about maple products and gave them an inside look at what Pennsylvania maple syrup has to offer.

“If you went from state-to-state where syrup is made and bought a sample, each one tastes just a little bit different because of the soil and the weather.” Mary Lee Zechman of Patterson Farms said.

The festival featured free ice cream drizzled in maple syrup, and many other foods.

For those who considered themselves maple syrup authorities, there was a taste test to see if they could pick out syrup made from real maple sugar.

“You have to try and find which is the real maple syrup, and it’s kind of cool to watch the kids sit there and taste things and try to figure out which one’s the real one.” Michelle Hornberger, Assistant Program Director for Dauphin County Parks and Recreation, said.

Hornberger said this event was put on for more than just the sweet tastes, it was put on to educate people about the maple sugar industry in Pennsylvania, which is in the top ten of maple syrup production in the United States.

“It’s really a history lesson for everyone.” Hornberger said.

Dauphin County Parks and Recreation said this is one of the first events of the year, and they plan to have many more events throughout the Spring and Summer.
