YORK -- PennDOT will restrict I-83 northbound on Friday at 9 p.m. to a single lane in southern York County.

The restriction will replace a dip in the road that has developed due to a deteriorating drainage pipe under the pavement.  The location of the restriction is in Shrewsbury Township, about 1.2 miles north of the Maryland line.

Between 19,000 and 20,000 cars travel on that portion of I-83 NB on a daily basis.

Crews intend to stabilize the concrete in the area over the drainage pipe by putting concrete into the void that has developed underneath the concrete pavement.

The restriction to a single lane will remain in place over the weekend until the work is done.

PennDOT will issue an announcement when both lanes have been restored.

Motorists should be alert when traveling on NB I-83, be patient and slow down in and around work zones.

In addition, if PennDOT determines it is necessary to close northbound I-83 they are working on a detour.
