GETTYSBURG -- A permit filed by the Ku Klux Klan has been approved, and the Maryland-based chapter of the white supremacist group will be able to gather at Gettysburg next month.

The National Park Service said in a statement, "The National Park Service mission in preserving and protecting the historic resources at Gettysburg includes making them available to all Americans, even those whose views are contrary to the majority of the American public."

The permit for Oct. 5 was approved despite much outspokenness about the group coming to Gettysburg battlefields for their rally.

Bill Mcallister was touring the grounds Thursday when the permit was issued. His great-great-great-grandfather was a medic during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

"To have the KKK come here is obnoxious. To speak with as much emotion as I can get without swearing... to me it's abhorrent they would come to this battlefield to do anything," he said.

The permit allows the group to gather from 1 to 4 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 5 on a lawn north of Meade's headquarters off Taneytown Road.

The KKK has gathered in Gettysburg before -- in 2006, a high police presence was required to patrol the rally. One anti-Klan protester was arrested, but there were no serious incidents.KKK gets permit to gather at Gettysburg
