“I didn’t even think I was capable of something like that," said Shawn Kelly. For him, this past Sunday evening was unforgettable.

Around 8:30 p.m., two masked men, dressed in full camouflage, burst into his grandmother’s home on Chinchilla Avenue in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. They carried Airsoft guns that looked real.

“I’m proud of him,” said 69-year-old Freda Andreadis.  “He kept them from doing anything else.  Who knows what was on their mind.”

The invaders allegedly knocked Kelly’s grandmother (Andreadis) down and tied Kelly’s wrists.  While beating him on the head, Kelly broke free and grabbed this pocket knife.  With one suspect on his back, he started stabbing the other.

“I just did two quick swings at him with the knife and at the time I freaked myself out.  I’ve never been in that situation.  I’ve never done anything like that before. And I was really freaked out I just stabbed somebody,” said Kelly.

After Kelly stabbed the second intruder, they took off their masks, and Kelly recognized them.  One of the alleged attackers was 18-year-old Luke Karpathios.  The other alleged attacker was a 17-year-old male, who is the son of a West Hempfield Township police officer.

Kelly says thinks they were after money.  “I just can’t believe something like that would happen especially around here.  This has me turning my head every time I hear a noise outside,” concluded Kelly.  “I did want to hurt them.  I just wanted to feel safe in my own house and get them out.”

Both suspects were sent to the hospital.  One has been released.  They could face felony charges for the invasions and impersonating police officers.

The West Hempfield Township Police Department has turned the investigation over to State Police, due to the fact that one of the suspects is the son of an officer. The Chief released this statement, "This investigation was never about a police officer's son. The investigation was about a home invasion and the crimes that were committed.  It was about the victims of the crime and it was about prosecuting those who broke the law."
