Mid-state hit hard with winter storm; accidents reported across the region

Updated: Tuesday, January 21 2014, 06:51 PM CST
A powerful winter storm hit the Susquehanna Valley hard today, and with the heavy snow, came scenes like this.

Slick roads have caused many accidents like this one on the George Wade Bridge. Traffic was backed up for miles on north-bound I-81, when this tractor trailer jack-knifed. No one was injured.

In York County, this tractor trailer jack-knifed, ending up in the ditch just off of I-83 near the Emigsville exit. This also caused traffic backups for miles in the southbound lanes. No word on injuries in this accident.

And to limit the amount of accidents -- and make the roads as safe as possible -- PennDOT has reduced the speed limit on all major roadways here in the midstate.

As you can see on this PennDOT sign, the speed limit is now 45 miles per hour on 81, 83, 283, 22-322, 11-15 , the Turnpike and many more.

The speed limit will remain at 45 until further notice. We'll let you know when it changes. If you don't have to travel, PennDOT is encouraging everyone to stay home.

Tonight we have live team coverage from across the mid-state area. Our reporters are out in the conditions, covering all angles of the storm.
