New Hope Academy will appeal to remain open

New Hope Academy says it will appeal the Department of Education's decision to not approve their charter's appeal.

The state rejected an appeal from the school to stay open, on Tuesday. Now hundreds of students will have to leave the school mid-year and transfer to the public district.

The school has been ordered to shut their doors by January 15h. The move means 800 kids in grades 5-12 have to transfer.

On Wednesday, students begged a crowd on King Street in front of New Hope Academy, to contact legislators to keep their school open. Many talked about how their lives turned around when they entered the school, saying the city district failed them.

School leaders say they will file papers to allow the school to stay open through the appeal, so students can at least finish the year at New Hope.

The State Department of Education Charter Appeals Board cited three reasons to close New Hope, including financial mishandling and student not meeting performance requirements.

A more detailed report from the appeals board is expected within 30 days.

County Commissioner Steve Chronister joined the fight to keep New Hope open, appealing to the Governor for help.  "I’m certainly not a supporter of closing schools and a charter school that has done as well as new hope that has taken traumatized kids and turned them around – it’s incredible what they’ve done."

York City School District pays the charter school per student.

The school provided this statement:

"First, we will appeal to remain open. We are deeply disappointed by the Pennsylvania Department of Educations decision not to approve our charters appeal, effective Jan 15, 2014. We remain dedicated to putting kids first, and well continue to remain by our students and staffs side to the very end. That is why we will appeal the Charter Appeal Boards decision to keep our school open. During this appeals process, we believe students deserve a consistent and safe educational environment, without disruption. Students and their families should not be ripped from a stable school environment with little to no time to prepare for a smooth transition as we appeal to remain open.

New Hope Academy is home to more than 800 students, many of which left a failing or unsafe school. Our students rely on our school as a safe and supportive place. This is why we will appeal to remain open. During our appeal, we will petition to grant a stay to remain open so that our students may finish their school year here at New Hope Academy Charter School. We will be filing all the necessary documents in the coming days. We ask that you please stay up to date by following our posts and updates for ways to support our appeal. Thank you for your support and putting kids and our communities first. Change does start with choice. And we will appeal."
