New legislation gives sexual assault victims better protection

Updated: Wednesday, March 12 2014, 06:29 PM CDT
A new bill will give sexual assault victims new ways to feel protected.

Right now in Pennsylvania, a sexual abuse victim can only get court ordered protection if there is a criminal investigation.

This new bill would allow victims to get protection with a civil court order.

"They could file for protection.  For many sex assault survivors that's important for their sense of safety following an assault," said Kristen Houser with PCAR.

This bill is 10 years in the making. It gives sexual assault victims the same protection as domestic abuse victims.

The bill passed the House on Wednesday morning with amendments, so it will need to go back to the Senate.
