QUARRYVILLE -- Quarryville Fire Company had a messy and stinky situation to deal with, but a situation that was life and death for 23 pigs.

A farmer on Solanco Road in southern Lancaster County called to report that a grate floor collapsed in a hog house, sending those 23 pigs, all about 75 pounds each, into 16 inches of manure.

The fire crews took air samples and set up ventilation for the farmer.  The farmer used the fire companies’ air work mask to enter the area, and along with two neighbors, were able to get all 23 pigs out of the pit.

The pigs were washed down and appeared to be ok.

Quarryville Fire Company reports this is, “Just another day in the life of a rural fire company.”
