Possible re-zoning in Dickinson Township draws ire

CARLISLE -- A request to re-zone a stretch of land along Interstate 81 and Allen Road will be voted upon by Dickinson Township supervisors in March, but residents who live near the land are concerned about a warehouse likely to be built.

Goodman-Birtcher, an internationally-known company, requested township officials to re-zone the land from business recreational to business industrial. It’s among the first step the company would have to hurdle before building a warehouse they hope would entice clients to use.

Laura Portillo, the township’s manager, said the request has been the main topic of discussion for residents and supervisors for months.

Despite several public hearings and comment sessions, board supervisors are likely to vote on the re-zoning request by March. However, Portillo said no requests to build the warehouse have formally been submitted.

“We haven’t seen anything,” she said. “They’d have to come and ask for a conditional use, and that’s a whole process in itself.”

The land, which stretches among Carlisle borough, South Middleton, West Pennsboro and Dickinson townships is located right beside Bob Line’s long-standing family farm.

“It’s an overkill in this area right now,” said Line about warehouses throughout his area.

“It may mean we have to keep the cattle further away from the side of the farm, it may mean we can’t use those fields,” said Line. “We just don’t know at this point.”

Line’s lawyer planned to testify at Tuesday night’s meeting on the health effects that diesel particles in the area could have on Line’s family and animals.

Board supervisors are expected to make a vote on re-zoning in Early March.
Calls for comment from Goodman-Birtcher were not immediately returned.
