Proposal would allow Pa. State Schools leave system

Updated: Tuesday, March 11 2014, 06:42 PM CDT
A new bill proposed in the state legislature would allow state colleges to leave the State System of Higher Eduction.

The lawmakers proposing the bill say because of financial problems and enrollment trends, colleges should be able to make their own decisions.

The schools would be able to become 'State related schools', but they must have enrollment of more than 7,000, pass special audit requirements, have the ability to compensate the state for value of its property, and continue to contribute to the employer share for pension obligations.

The senators proposing the plan say transferring the schools will bring millions of dollars back into the state system through the sale of buildings and land. Proposal would allow Pa. State Schools leave system
