Spaghetti dinner to raise money for rescued horses

Hundreds of people chowed down on an all you can eat spaghetti dinner at the Hummelstown Fire Hall Saturday night to help 44 rescued horses.

The event started at 4 and ended at 7 p.m.

Toward the end of 2013, our cameras were there when the Harrisburg Humane Society rescued 29 horses from a farm in the Hershey/ Palmyra area.

"They were generally neglected, pretty much abandoned on the farm not really well taken care of," Amy Kaunas, Humane Society of Harrisburg Area.

Now, the Humane Society of Harrisburg takes care of 44 horses.
And it's expensive.

The 1.8 Million dollar a year non profit suddenly found itself with an added expense of more than 100-thousand dollars.

CBS21 found out there are several reason why people abandon their horses.

"I think that there's a lot of things that created a perfect storm for the horses to be abandoned and neglected. The horse slaughter legislation changed dramatically in the U.S., where the slaughter houses have shut down so there isn't a market for unwanted horses as much as there was, so that combined with the economic downturn has caused many people to just walk away," said Kaunas.

Walking into the Hummelstown Fire hall today and chowing down helped horses like Daisy.

"Daisy is my girl. Daisy is a 17, 18 year old thoroughbred mare and she is just so sweet and a wonderful personality," said Kaunas.

This is the second year that the Humane Society of Harrisburg organized the all you can eat spaghetti dinner. People like Stephanie know it's importance.

"They're very expensive animals and it takes a lot of money and upkeep and all that stuff to keep them going with stables, feed and vet care, so having people come out to events like this, I think really helps and the support the community shows means a lot," said Stephanie Griffith, volunteer.
