SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP – The Susquehanna Township school board voted Monday night to accept the resignation of former assistant high school principal Shawn Sharkey.

Sharkey, 45, was charged in September with having a sexual relationship with a minor girl who was a student at Susquehana Township High School. The girl alleged to police that the relationship with Sharkey began in February and continued through August. Sharkey denies the charges.

The board’s acceptance of Sharkey’s resignation came after he had actually resigned, according to superintendent Susan Kegerise. She didn’t have the exact effective date of his resignation in front of her, she said, but added that it had already happened.

The board voted to hire two new assistant high school principals Monday night, one to replace Sharkey and one to replace another principal who had left to take a position in another district. The new hires, whose start dates are dependent upon clearances, reference checks, and a license transfer, are Brian Taltone and Kevin O’Donnell.

They will certainly begin by the end of the year, Kegerise said. “We want them to start as soon as possible,” she added.
