Thousands of fish die at Cumberland Co. fish hatchery

Updated: Tuesday, March 11 2014, 06:44 PM CDT
A Cumberland County fish hatchery is dealing with the loss of 10,000 fish.

Workers at the Green Spring Trout Farm in North Newton Township put pumps in the water to help circulate oxygen. They tell CBS 21 that when the snow melted, it pushed manure from nearby farms into the hatchery, which cut off the oxygen to the fish.

"The thing that really I think is going to be affected is we lost pretty much all of our great brown trout, 18 to 24 inches. We pretty much lost and this so those folks who were interested in getting those big fishes are gonna have to take smaller ones or rainbow trouts," said Doug Holt, who owns Green Spring.

Workers will monitor the air quality in the water to prevent any other fish from dying. Thousands of fish die at Cumberland Co. fish hatchery
