Three local school districts receive Safe School grants

Updated: Tuesday, March 4 2014, 04:44 AM CST
Reported by Christina Butler:

YORK -- Three school districts in York County have grants worth $25,000 or just under that amount.

The Safe Schools Targeted Grant is through the state Department of Education.

Eastern York County School District, South Eastern, and Dover Area School Districts were all recipients.  "Anytime you can get money and do so without dipping into taxpayer's pockets, it's a good thing," says Todd Hoover who is the Director of Plants and Facilities for Eastern York.

He says the district will use the money for online training for staff and to plan mini drills.  It will go toward preparation for all emergency events, not just intruder emergencies.

Some of the money will go toward "go-kits," which are boxes packed with electronics and supplies that could be mobile in case of an evacuation.

The grants were awarded last month, and the money needs to be accounted for or used by the end of June.
