UPDATE: Assistant Principal accused of sex with student turns himself into police

Updated: Saturday, September 21 2013, 03:31 PM CDT
UPDATE:
An assistant principal at a central Pennsylvania public high school is accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with a student.

Shawn Sharkey was charged Friday, and he turned himself in Saturday.

The Susquehanna Township School District says it plans to fire Sharkey.

Court filings show that Sharkey was charged with sexual contact with a student, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor. Court records don't list a lawyer for Sharkey and no one answered the telephone Saturday at his Abington home.

Authorities say the 45-year-old Sharkey had at least 10 different sexual encounters between February and March with a then-16-year-old student. Sharkey told police that he'd had no inappropriate contact with her.

He is out of jail on 50-thousand dollars bail.

According to court documents, charges were filed against Shawn Sharkey on Friday. Sharkey is charged with sexual contact with a student, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with a minor.

According to the criminal affidavit, the victim told police the alleged sexual activity happened at the Red Roof Inn in Harrisburg.  The affidavit says the relationship started in February 2013 and took place on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Court records show Sharkey had rented a room at the hotel twenty eight times between February and August 2013.

According to the affidavit, the victim admitted to the relationship when she was interviewed by police. Police approached Sharkey and asked him about the allegations, when he responded that he had spoken to the victim a few times about school issues and some of her personal problems but nothing further. The affidavit also says he denied any inappropriate contact with the student.

According to school officials, Sharkey has been placed on administrative leave. "Mr. Sharkey was placed on administrative leave with pay on Wednesday pending the completion of a criminal investigation, Kegerise said. It is our belief that this did not occur at school or on school property, nor during the school day.

Sharkey started with the school district on Jan. 22, 2013, having come from Philadelphia School District where he was dean of ninth grade students, the statement from the school said.

On behalf of board members, educators, and students, we are sickened and saddened by this news, and are very concerned about those involved in this difficult situation. Kegerise said.

A warrant has been issued for Sharkey's arrest. UPDATE: Assistant Principal accused of sex with student turns himself into police
