UPDATE: Crews battling fire at Delta Pizzeria in York County

Updated: Wednesday, October 30 2013, 01:10 PM CDT
Reported by: Brandie Meng

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, volunteer firefighters in Delta, York County were passing by the Delta Pizza Shop on Main Street and noticed smoke coming from the back of the building.

The firefighters called in the fire and returned with trucks to fight the fires.  "By the time we got here we had fire through the roof.. And heavy smoke pushing from the 2nd floor," said Jeff Petty of the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company.

The fire started in the back of the building and quickly spread through the first floor pizza shop and the apartments upstairs.  "By the time crews could get to the 2nd floor the majority of the 2nd floor was gone, so we did minimization and went back to latter pipe operations." Petty said.

While dealing with a collapsed roof, crews realized the hydrant system wasn't adequate to fight the flames.  "Getting water up here the hydrant system didn't carry us.   So we had to set up a tanker shuttle," Petty said.

The Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company confirms one firefighter suffered from minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Ten people were displaced when the fire ripped through their apartments.

Many in the small community came out to watch the local pizza shop, a community landmark, burn down. "It will be a loss, a loss to our community.  Hopefully they can rebuild," said neighbor Joan Jones.  "Buildings can be replaced, lives can't.  Very fortunate everyone did get out."
