UPDATE: Dangerously cold air invades area, with sub-zero wind chills and likely record cold

Updated: Monday, January 6 2014, 07:11 PM CST
Reported by Meteorologist Nate Wardle:

UPDATE (Monday at 815 p.m.):

HARRISBURG -- Sunday night, while talking about the freezing rain, I mentioned the worst was yet to come.  Well now it is here.

Through Wednesday temperatures will be very, very cold, as in the coldest air in 20 years.  This will also rank as one of the coldest few days this area has EVER seen.

Monday night's low will be in the single digits, in fact right around zero and it will be windy as well.  With the wind chill temperatures, it will feel like -10 degrees, or even colder.

Tuesday's high will be right around 10 degrees, and the wind chill will make it feel more like -20 degrees.

In these conditions, frostbite can occur in around half an hour.  If you have to be outside, you must make sure as much of your skin is covered as possible.  We cannot reiterate what a dangerous situation this is.

Please pay close attention to any warnings issues and bundle up when headed out to work or anywhere else.  Also, be sure to bring your pets inside and be sure to take extra steps to keep them warm, and check on any elderly neighbors.

HARRISBURG -- As we move through the evening hours, temperatures are actually warming.  As of 5 p.m., the temperatures in Harrisburg were at freezing, and freezing drizzle was still being reported.

However, as of 6 p.m., that temperature rose to above freezing and have stayed there.  Precipitation has changed over to drizzle in the area.

However, there are still a lot of very problematic areas, not only on back roads but also on the Interstates.  Major accidents have been reported on I-81, where Ewa Roman is, I-78 in Lebanon County, I-283 and numerous other major roads.

We are going to continue to see those temperatures warm as we move toward midnight, which is why the precipitation for tomorrow is going to be either rain or snow.  It likely will start as rain and then change to snow as things get colder.

While these issues are definitely of note, especially if you are traveling, the true danger is coming Monday through Wednesday as temperatures get very, very cold.  As in the coldest air in 20 years, which is the some of the coldest this area has EVER seen.
