HARRISBURG -- On the holiday honoring the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, more than 60 volunteers spent the day in his Harrisburg government center namesake in time for a new fund to keep the building clean.

Newly serving mayor Eric Papenfuse rallied volunteers on Monday to help clean up City Hall after one official volunteering described it as “disgusting.”

“As we all know, Harrisburg is kind of tight as far as funding our sister,” said Darlene Irving, a city resident. “The main thing is we want to make sure the funds that are available go right back into the community.”

Irving, alongside her son, spent the day off from work volunteering. She joined others by cleaning windows, scrubbing railings, and soon will replace the carpet.

“This is a people’s place and it should be safe and clean,” said state Rep. Patty Kim, D-103. “It’s a new start and this is the perfect way.”

Kim was one of a couple dignitaries who cleaned up City Hall, including U.S. Rep. Scott Perry, R-4. Kim and her staff focused on the elevators, adding she hopes a refurbished work area for the new administration will start the year off the right way.

Papenfuse, who spent the day volunteering and speaking at various events throughout the city, said he believed it was the first time in more than 30 years volunteers from the community took action within the building’s walls.

Papenfuse announced the City Hall Beautiful Fund to raise donations to maintain the building hoping to dedicate money towards to projects such as roofing repairs.

“If we can do some volunteering in the community to clean up the building and help so they don’t have to pay people to do that so that funds they would have paid could go back right into our community,” said Kim.

To donate, send checks to “The Foundation For Enhancing Communities, 200 North Third Street, PO Box 678, Harrisburg, Pa., 17108-0678.
