Water main break closes road in Lower Swatara Township

SWATARA -- Crews from United Water remain on the scene of a water main break along Grayson Road in Swatara Township and will be for several more hours. 

United Water spokesperson Bob Manbeck said the heavy precipitation Thursday afternoon delayed progress on fixing the 12 inch diameter pipe. The water company had anticipated the have repairs complete by 7:30p.m. but it'll likely longer.

Grayson Road, a popular roadway for commuters to get around 322, is closed between Mushroom Hill Road and Witmer Road. Traffic is being detoured in opposite directions.

The roadway connects to the entrance of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. Swatara Township Police responded to a handful of vehicles stuck in the roadway, including a tractor trailer. 

Only a few customers, including nearby warehouses, were impacted by the bursting pipe. No homes were affected, according to Manbeck.

The cause of the pipe burst is unknown at this time.

The 12-inch diameter pipe burst shortly after 1:00 Thursday afternoon and the cause is unknown at this time, according to United Water spokesperson Bob Manbeck. 

In cooperation with United Water, Swatara Township Police have closed Grayson Road while crews work through the snow to repair the break. 

Manbeck said only a few customers are affected which comprise of warehouses and he did not believe any residences were impacted at this time.

Officials expect  Grayson Road -- a side road many travelers take off of 322 and Derry Street -- to be closed through 7:30 Thursday night.
