Weis grocery stores accidentally overcharge customers

Reported by Ewa Roman (ERoman@sbgtv.com)

If you shopped at any of the 165 Weis Stores in Pennsylvania and surrounding states on September 28th, you may want to double-check your bank statement. 4,800 people who used their debit or credit cards, were overcharged.

"I didn't know about that," said Monica Hutcheson, a Weis customer from Dauphin County.

"I haven't heard about it personally, I mean I've seen it on Facebook," said another Weis customer, Eric Meyer.

Weis says, First Data, it's payment processor of Atlanta, Georgia, had an outage and their back-up system failed.

In a statement the grocery story chain says, "We apologize for the confusion and problems experienced by our customers. We are analyzing this incident with First Data closely to prevent it from happening in the future."

Weis is refunding shoppers and says that those with bonus cards should have received automated calls. But Monica Hutcheson's phone never rang. She's going home to check her statement.

"I didn't check anything! I expect grocery stores to be on point you know? So when I go to the check out, I hand them my bonus card, I'm expecting to have it come off, but now that you say that, I 'll have to start checking it," said Hutcheson.

Even though this happened to people who use plastic, Weis customers CBS 21 spoke with Sunday say they'll continue using cards.

"Majority of the time yes. For the main purpose you don't want to carry cash for your own safety," said Meyer.

There are a few things you can take away from this: experts say shopping with a credit card provides more protection than with a debit card, because if you get overcharged, it 's not deducted from a bank account. Using a debit card keeps you out of debt, becuase you spend what you have and this also shows the importance of checking your statement regulary
