York Co. elderly couple loses thousands to distraction burglary

Reported by: Kyle Rogers

An elderly couple on a fixed income are trying to figure out what they're going to do now, after somebody distracted them and stole over $30,000 from their York County home.

Northern York County Regional Police say a man approached the couple at their home along the 500 block of East Canal Road in Conewago Township, saying he wanted to speak with them about placing pipes in a neighboring property. The man claimed to be a York city worker, however, police say he only distracted the couple while another man went inside their home to steal jewelry and cash from a hidden safe.

The 82-year-old man living there said he's afraid now that the men would come back. He said they made off with much of their life sayings -- so much of it that he'll probably never see it again, or live long enough to earn it back.

As the man was talking to the couple, he said to them he had to take an emergency phone call and meet another person at their truck in front of their home. The man told CBS 21 News, he never came back and when the couple went back into their home, they found it had been ransacked with jewelry on the floor and money missing.

"This is the time of year these traveling bands of criminals are going through the area," said Lt. David Lash of Northern York County Regional Police. He said it appeared to have been a random act, not targeted, and most likely from people from out of the area preying on unsuspecting people.

The man described the distracting city-worker-imposter has a Hispanic man who spoke with a heavy accent. He's 5'8" with short, dark, wavy hair and was wearing florescent vest with long pants. His name, as he said to the couple, was Billy.

"You have to be skeptical," said Lt. Hash. "This is the sign of the times, you can't trust people who come up to your door and knock on it."
