DERRY TOWNSHIP -- Runners overtook Hershey this weekend for the 4th annual Hershey Half Marathon.

On Saturday, more than 200 children 13 and under ran their own race to help raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.

One of those participants was 8-year-old Caden Capitani, who was chosen was this year’s ‘Miracle Child’.

Caden laced up his shoes and ran alongside kids his age in the Hershey Fun Run, but his journey to this point has been more challenging than most.

“He’s had 10 procedures in the operating room,” Jessica Capitani, his mother, explained. “He’s never gone a day in his life without medicine.”

Caden was born with Down syndrome, and along with respiratory issues, he has struggled every day of his life, but you’ll never see those troubles bringing him down.

“Even with all he’s been through, he still wakes up every day and he does always have a smile and sees the best in everything,” Jessica said, adding that where he is today is all thanks to the medical team at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

On Sunday, Caden’s parents will run the Hershey Half Marathon, raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, which they say has been instrumental in Caden’s health and upbringing.

“It wouldn’t be possible, all the care he gets, without the support of CMN,” Jessica said.

Caden’s parents say that the inspiration from their son is all they need to compete.

“We’ve all made a little saying, ‘Run like Caden,’ so when your legs and lungs fail you, you run with heart, cause that’s how Caden runs. He runs with Heart. He’s all heart.”

As this year’s ‘Miracle Child,’ Caden will be kicking off the half marathon by saying, ‘Ready, set, go!’ He’ll also dance to encourage all of the runners, and present the winners with their medals.

If you want to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network on behalf of Caden and his family and help raise money for the cause, you can go to http://childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org and search for ‘Run like Caden’. The money raised will go to helping kids like Caden through Hershey’s Children Hospital.
