Lansanah, Gaskins provide important message to kids

HARRISBURG -- Overcoming the odds and how to handle adversity.

Count Harrisburg native Danny Lansanah as an expert on both.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker, along with New York Giants running back Kendall Gaskins, spent part of Friday sharing his unique story to students at Capital Academy in Harrisburg.

Lansanah made the National Football League as an undrafted free agent in 2008 with the Green Bay Packers. After being released, he didn't play another regular season game until this past December -- a span of five years.

Lansanah's goal is to provide the children with a sense of hope.

"They see us on TV, but they really seldom see NFL players walk into school and give them motivation to be great," said Lansanah, who signed with football teams in Canada and the now-defunct United Football League, respectively, before returning to the NFL.

Gaskins' climb to the pros hasn't been easy, either. He was not drafted after attending Richmond and has been a member of both the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans before landing with the Giants.

Each player answered whatever questions the students had.

"We're just here today discussing adversity and just trying to preach greatness to the kids; just show them support," said Gaskins, a New Jersey native who's in Harrisburg for offseason training with Lansanah.

"We just want to give back to the community."
